Intricately woven from dried sodsod grass of the Philippines and produced using traditional artisan techniques by the Weavers of the Tagolwanen Tribe.

Our mats measure to approximately

Preserving Traditional Banig Designs

For the Tagolwanen tribes, creativity and beauty come easily. Inspiration is considered a blessing from the Magbabaya or Divine Spirit.

Where do the weavers get their designs?

Designs are mainly passed from one generation to another. Some of the designs used in today’s banig are recalled from what a Manglala has seen her from her mother’s or grandma’s work. For those that have stopped making mats for a long time, remembering designs from past decades is almost impossible. As the initiative to make mats were revived, these forgotten designs are slowly being remembered and can now be viewed on the woven mats we have today.

Some of the designs are made up as the weaver weaves.

Sometimes, and the most valuable of all, a Manglala weaves a design she has seen in her dream. It is believed that designs from dreams are blessings direct from the Magbabaya.

Nature-inspired

Many of the designs woven into the banig are inspired from nature. As the Tagolwanens live in the midst of majestic mountains, greenery and clear skies, most of the designs are inspired by the beauty of nature.
