FAQ

WHAT IS A BANIG?

Banig (pronounced bah-Nig) translates as mat in Tagalog, the native language of the Philippines. They are woven by hand, taking about 1-2 weeks to finish and are traditionally used for sitting or sleeping, but are also known to entertain toddlers (ultimate play mat) and siblings (why not roll up your little sister like a spring roll).

Banig is 100% natural and it is because of this we have chosen to keep with tradition and not alter the way in which they are made.

This means they are biodegradable and can be added to your compost, be lining for your chicken coup, guinea pig pen or even decorate your garden once they reach the end of their lifetime.

THEY ARE MADE BY WHO, WHAT AND HOW?

Banig are created by the women weavers of the Philippines. Pandanus leaves or sea grass (cutely named buri, tikog, and sodsod depending on the region), are collected by hand and bundled up to dry by sun or by air.

Once dried they are cut into strips and then intricately and patiently folded into a design. The process is a sacred tradition and is taught across generations of women within communities.

The type of materials used, shape and pattern of the mats are determined by the area in which they originate from.

WHAT'S THE INCONSISTENCY?

Because our products are made from natural materials and by hand, this means colour, gradient and sizing are different.

The banigs in particular have an inconsistent charm – regional weavers do not use tape measures but rather measure by the length of their arm and foot.

And as each weaver is different, so too are the mats, making each piece as unique and individual as the women who created them.
